Sports and Toddlers: How Do I Get My Child Interested in Sports?

Hm, how to get children interested in sports? Tricky, very tricky. This is where no knowledge of the importance of social play, the significance of sports in early childhood, and the benefits games can bring into your child’s life helps.

Getting a toddler interested in sports can be a daunting task. Kids can be a bit iffy when it comes to this topic at that age. Don’t worry, we’ll help you get your child interested in sports for toddlers in no time!

How do I get my toddler interested in sports?

You may think that getting your toddler interested in sports is much easier than teaching your child to learn once he or she starts school at Poway Unified School District. And, to be frank, it is, but there are still some challenges to overcome and trick to employ.

  1. Leading by example - Children acquire most lifelong habits from their parents, and by simply watching what they do. Similarly, if your child sees you playing sports, chances are he or she will be quick to follow.

  2. Playing sports together - You should do more than just instructing your child that sports are good. Take the time and play sports together with your kid, this will catch their interest the quickest!

  3. Keeping it fun - Just be careful not to overdo it with the competition. We know you won’t but just in case, we have to point out to keep sports as fun as possible while you’re enjoying them with your child.

  4. Inviting friends - Allow your child to invite friends so you can all play sports together. There are few things more fun than this, and it will greatly increase your child’s interest in sports.

  5. Watching sports - Sitting in front of the TV the entire day is, obviously, bad, but placing your child next to you for a watch of sports on the telly can go a long way towards increasing his or her interest in sports.

  6. Sporting goods - Take your child out for a round of shopping for sports equipment. Once your child sees everything sporting goods have to offer, there will be no turning back.

  7. Speaking helps - Lastly, tell your child about all the benefits of playing sports and games. It’s not nearly as visual as many of the above tips, but it is still a fine approach.

What do I do if my toddler refuses to play sports?

First of all, you should try and identify the reason behind your child’s refusal to participate in sports. Perhaps the sport you had in mind is of no interest to your child, or perhaps there have been some other issues that have caused your child to refuse to play sports.

To be completely honest, there is no uniform way to make your child play sports, and you should definitely avoid making your child do things he or she is not comfortable with.

However, you should always try and determine the underlying cause, and try to deal with that. The best way is to try and have sincere talks with your child, and to try and get to the root of the problem. Be gentle, be patient, and try to find a solution by employing the tips we listed above.
